This week’s potatoes are Yorkshire grown ‘Nicola’, a tasty ‘salad’ variety with a waxy texture and most suitable for boiling. All the other vegetables are from Yorkshire and Lancashire, with the exception of the onions and some Spanish aubergines and peppers in the very largest boxes. Fruit boxes have Kent cherries. We have some English (but not organic) ‘Discovery’ apples arriving in the shop now; every year they seem to arrive a few days earlier. The organic ones should follow in a week or two.

Although there is a basic European standard that all organic producers must meet, the ‘Soil Association’ insists on the highest standards of animal welfare of all the organic organisations in this country. We buy from Soil Association certified farms in the North of England ... Large £1.78 1/2 dozen ... Medium £ 1.58 1/2 dozen. The birds are kept in small flocks with access to carefully managed grassland so they can, as much as possible, pursue their natural patterns of behaviour. The feed contains no colouring agents so the yolks are a bright natural yellow.
New Season Scottish Chanterelles
The new season for Scottish chanterelles has just started and we have some on order for the end of the week. We also have the first of the English Apples in now: Discovery is always the first to appear and this year they are earlier than ever. The first few boxes are always quite acidic but it's great to have fresh apples in again after a summer of southern hemisphere ones.
