How to make a vegetarian diet healthy
Often, a vegetarian diet is perceived to be healthy but in reality, the protein from meat and fish is replaced with carbohydrates leading to a less than healthy diet. Whilst we do need carbohydrates, we also need protein to lessen the impact carbohydrates have on blood sugar. If you’re vegetarian or vegan it can be difficult to know what to replace protein with. Here are a few options:
• Tofu
• Quorn (not vegan)
• Pulses such as chickpeas, kidney beans
• Lentils
These are low fat sources of protein. For vegetarians, there can be a tendency to eat a lots of dairy products, in particular cheese which is high in saturated fat. This is the type of fat we need to be reducing, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats do not have the same effect on our bodies. They are found in oily fish, olive oil and nuts.


My top 5 tips for eating a healthy vegetarian/ vegan diet:
• Replace meat protein with a suitable alternative (see above) to avoid filling up on carbohydrates
• Eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables
• Choose low fat dairy products where possible (not recommended for under 5s unless they are overweight)
• Replace unhealthy snacks such as crisps, chocolate and cake with vegetable sticks and dips like hummus or fruit, nuts and seeds
• Limit alcohol as it contains empty calories and has no nutritional benefit
