Well we’re very much into Autumn now and the Crown Prince squash are ripening in the shop cellar. We’ve been advised to hang onto them a little longer before putting them in boxes as, flavour-wise they will benefit from the extra storage. So get your Squash recipes together for a couple of weeks time!Crown Prince Squash - not this week but soon... id=

Back to this coming week where the star of the show is the dark Cavolo Nero, some grown by local Sheffield Organic Growers and some by Jonny Watson from The Organic Pantry in Tadcaster. I am always pleasantly surprised by Cavolo Nero because it can seem a little tough in your fingers and a little intimidating. But strip out the centre rib and chop it finely before use and the dark green leaf really adds a depth of flavour to a dish. I’ve added a recipe below for you to try and here’s a link to another in our archive for you to try.

So, here are the plans for next week’s boxes:

Caldo Verde

This is a great way to serve the dark green kale Cavolo Nero

Total preparation and cooking time: 90 mins.

Ingredients

  • 4 Medium-sized potatoes, peeled and chopped into 3/4-inch dice
  • 1 medium-sized onion, peeled and coarsely chopped
  • 2 cups coarsely chopped kale leaves, firmly packed
  • 12 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1-1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon fruity olive oil
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Preparation

  1. In a large pot, combine the potatoes, onion, kale, garlic, and salt.
  2. Add 6 cups water and bring to a boil.
  3. Cover, lower heat, and simmer very gently for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until kale is quite tender.
  4. In as many batches as necessary, pour the soup into the container of an electric blender or food processor and blend until you have a smooth texture.
  5. Pour soup back into soup pot and taste for seasonings.
  6. Add more water if the soup seems too thick.
  7. Just before serving, add the olive oil and black pepper.

(Serves 6)

Competition News

Look out soon for news of the Competition we launched back in September. We called it a Design a T-shirt Competition in honour of our 30th birthday next year but it turns out that one of the winning designs will become a new long handled Tote bag, another will be a Beanies Tea Towel and the third will indeed be used for a T-shirt. We have had some delightful entries – so thanks to all who took part – you will all receive a small token of our appreciation, while news of the winners in three different age groups will be posted very soon.

Christmas arrangements

We’ll be sending a proper paper newsletter out in the boxes, too, soon, to give you hands on details about Christmas arrangements that you can post up on your notice-board by the cooker!

Briefly, as we have in the past, we will be delivering through the week running up to Christmas but the deliveries will all be a day early, so:
Tuesday customers will receive theirs on Monday 21st,
Wednesday customers will receive theirs on Tuesday 22nd
Thursdays will come on Wednesday 23rd
Fridays on Thursday 24th.

We will be offering a “Let us do your shopping for you” Service again this year where you can put in an order and we will put them up for you so that all you need to do is come and pay and collect them. We charge £3.60 for this service. You can come into the shop and pick up a form or drop us an email with your order stating when you’d like to collect it. When doing that please specify whether you want organic or non-organic fruit and veg and indicate if substitutions are acceptable.

We will also be offering our standard Christmas Collect box containing all your Christmas veg essentials – roasting potatoes, sprouts, parsnips, red cabbage, that sort of thing – for those customers who don’t necessarily want a delivery but would like some organic veg. More details on this nearer the time.

Details of our shop opening times will be posted nearer the time partly because we’re waiting for our suppliers to let us know when they will be open.

There will be no Veg Box deliveries in the week between Christmas and New Year but after that things will be back to normal pretty much straight away.
