Delayed again! Sincere apologies if you've been waiting to see what's coming in your boxes - some of you will have received them already. Mark, who chooses the veg for the boxes has asked me to point out that potato customers will notice smaller quantities of potatoes in their boxes this week. As I am sure you are aware the old crop potatoes that we have been using are now pretty much finished and we will be using new crop potatoes for the most part in the boxes from now on. They are of course rather more expensive than the old ones so in order to leave a bit of budget left for other things we have had to reduce quantities... similarly with onions and carrots. This is the most expensive time of year for these root crops as we are having to use imported produce.
The potatoes this week are a variety called Lady Crystl - no, there is no 'a' - which should be delicious boiled or as a salad potato but will probably roast very nicely too - you wouldn't get a typical maris piper fluffy roast potato with them but just wash and dry them, cut larger ones in half, then swoosh them in a tray with a spoonful or two of oil and a good sprinkling of salt and whack them in a hottish oven for thirty minutes or so until they are tender to the poke of a knife or skewer.
Here's what the boxes look like this week:
B - a pot of mushrooms instead of potatoes
D - a full 1kg of potatoes, and a leafy lettuce
E - Sweet potaotes and mushrooms
L and M - Cucumber and Fennel
It's lovely to see the nectarines appearing again and Q boxes will have a few. Your turn will come soon too, K boxes!
